Scholarships & Funding for Online Engineering Degrees

Ways to pay for an online engineering degree, and the awards we have verified on official university pages (41 so far). A listing never means that every student or program qualifies, and the existence of assistantships or scholarships does not make a program “fully funded”. Campus assistantships are not assumed to be open to distance students — where a university says whether an award applies to online students, the listing shows it. Distance, engineering and lab fees are listed on each program page when published. For doctoral programs, see funding for distance engineering PhD students.

Federal student aid eligibility depends on the student, the program and the institution. Confirm with the university's financial aid office and at studentaid.gov (U.S. Department of Education) before relying on any form of aid.

Scholarships

Awards a university or department funds. Eligibility, amounts and renewal rules are set by the university; most are competitive. Admission does not mean an award.

Fellowships

Merit-based graduate awards, usually competitive and most common at doctoral level. A fellowship's value and length are what the university publishes — nothing more is assumed.

Assistantships

Teaching or research positions that pay a stipend and/or tuition in exchange for work. That assistantships exist does not mean every student receives one.

Tuition waivers

Tuition remission without a separate stipend unless the university says otherwise.

Tuition discounts and special rates

Reduced rates for groups such as alumni, military members or employees of partner organizations.

Employer tuition assistance

Programs where an employer pays part of tuition, sometimes through a university partnership. Terms are set by the employer — common for working engineers studying online.

Military benefits and rates

Military tuition rates or benefits a university publishes. Eligibility is set by the university and the benefit program.

Grants

Need-based aid that does not have to be repaid. Eligibility depends on the student, the program and the institution.

Other funding

Other published funding arrangements.

Loans

Money that must be repaid with interest. Loans are not scholarships and are listed separately.
