Online Engineering PhD Attendance Requirements

What online engineering PhD programs say about campus visits, residency, where research happens, qualifying exams and dissertation defenses, with examples from programs' own pages.

Updated October 12, 2026 · OnlineEngineeringSchools.net editorial team

Coursework is the easy part of an online engineering PhD to move online. Research, exams and the dissertation defense are where attendance rules appear, and they are often written on a different page from the one that says "online." This guide sorts what programs state into a few patterns, with examples from their own pages, so you can tell a program that never asks you to travel from one that expects regular visits or a period in residence.

What our directory shows

In our directory (October 2026), 25 online engineering doctoral programs are listed. Classified by what their pages say about physical attendance (how we collect data):

  • 3 state that no campus attendance is required.
  • 6 require limited visits, such as for exams or presentations.
  • 3 expect research to be done in person or at a suitable facility.
  • 1 requires a period in residence.
  • 1 has another in-person requirement.
  • 11 do not state an attendance policy that we could verify.

The last group is the largest, so for nearly half the programs the answer has to come from the department. All of these are research doctorates. A professional doctorate such as a DEng is a different degree and can set different requirements.

Programs that state no campus visits

Some programs say plainly that you never need to come to campus.

  • Capitol Technology University's PhD in Astronautical Engineering is "offered 100% online with no on-campus classes or residencies required."
  • The University of Florida's mechanical and aerospace engineering department lists its online PhD in Mechanical Engineering with "No requirement to visit campus."
  • Michigan Tech describes a "100% online" PhD in Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics.

"No visits" still leaves conditions. Michigan Tech's Graduate School requires research credits to be taken through Michigan Tech and supervised by a member of its graduate faculty, wherever you live. Our fully online list includes only programs whose pages state they can be completed without attendance.

Campus visits and residency

Visits tied to milestones

Another arrangement is online coursework with travel for key exams.

  • Texas A&M's online PhD in Electrical Engineering says students take the qualifying exam, preliminary oral exam and dissertation defense "in the same way as the on-campus program," and "will need to cover their travel expenses to the campus for these exams."
  • The University of Alabama's primarily online PhD in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics holds the dissertation proposal and defense in person in Tuscaloosa.
  • Texas A&M's online PhD in Petroleum Engineering requires a qualifying exam in the first year and says students "may be required to take the exam on campus."
  • The University of South Carolina says its distance PhD students "may visit campus for a major milestone such as qualifying exam, dissertation proposal, or dissertation defense."

Regular visits and residency

A few programs go further.

  • The University of North Dakota's online PhD in Electrical Engineering requires "a minimum of three campus visits," with a presentation at each, and says a candidate should be present for the dissertation defense.
  • UND's online PhD in Petroleum Engineering requires a two-day campus visit in Grand Forks each semester, plus two consecutive semesters in residence during the first two years.

Residency can also be defined without relocation. UND's electrical engineering page says online students can meet the residency requirement by showing that their research is coordinated with their advisor and committee in an environment with regular intellectual interaction, which may be provided through their place of employment, a national lab or another research facility.

Where the research happens

For many applicants, this question decides fit.

  • Texas A&M's online electrical engineering PhD says dissertation research "should involve only theories, software, or the modest use of hardware, rather than any physical lab use." It also asks students to submit a signed document showing their employer knows about the PhD study and allows the results to be published.
  • UND's online PhDs in biomedical and chemical engineering say students will be required to complete research work in person, or possibly at research facilities at their own location.
  • South Carolina says its successful distance doctoral students generally have research resources at their workplace or a nearby laboratory, or conduct some or all research on campus.

If your research needs a wet lab, a wind tunnel or specialized equipment, a program that limits remote work to theory and software may not suit your topic, however flexible its schedule.

An advisor before you apply

Several programs expect a faculty match before admission. Texas A&M's online electrical engineering PhD requires a faculty member to "commit to serve as the dissertation advisor prior to the admission of a student." The University of Arizona tells prospective online software engineering PhD students to secure an advisor before submitting an application. Alabama's aerospace PhD page tells applicants to contact faculty and arrange an on-campus visit before applying.

Exams and proctoring

Course exams can bring their own logistics. The University of Alabama's online mechanical engineering PhD says exams are taken off campus with live proctors approved by the university. UND's College of Engineering and Mines says all exams must be proctored unless the instructor states otherwise, through ProctorU Live+, an in-person testing center or Honorlock depending on the course.

Questions to ask before you apply

  • Which milestones (qualifying exam, proposal, defense) are held in person, and how many trips should you plan for?
  • Is there a residency requirement, and can work or a national lab satisfy it?
  • What kind of research can be done remotely in this department?
  • Does your employer need to sign anything about time, data or publication?
  • Must you secure an advisor before applying?
  • Who pays for required travel?
