Funding for Distance Engineering PhD Students

How distance engineering PhD students pay for the degree: what programs say about assistantships, employer support, fellowships, tuition discounts and federal loans, and what to ask.

Updated October 12, 2026 · OnlineEngineeringSchools.net editorial team

Engineering departments commonly list teaching and research assistantships among the financial assistance they offer graduate students. Distance students should not assume that support extends to them. Online doctoral program pages rarely say anything about funding for students who study remotely, so the realistic sources are usually an employer, an outside fellowship, a tuition discount or loans. This guide explains what we found in program pages, where other money can come from, and the questions to ask before you enroll.

What our directory shows

In our directory (October 2026), none of the 25 online engineering doctoral programs states on its pages that funding is available to distance students (how we collect data). That does not mean no distance student has ever been funded. It means the pages are silent, and you will need a written answer from the department.

Where funding is mentioned, it is general. Texas A&M's online PhD in Electrical Engineering page notes that the department "offers financial assistance in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships and scholarships to exceptional incoming graduate students," but it does not say whether online doctoral students can receive them. Capitol Technology University's PhD in Astronautical Engineering lists tuition reductions instead: a military servicemember rate and a 20% discount on doctoral tuition for full-time high school and community college faculty and staff. A discount lowers the bill; it is not a stipend.

Why assistantships tend to stay on campus

We have no PhD page in the directory that ties assistantships to campus in so many words, but several online master's programs do, and they show how departments draw the line:

  • Purdue's online MSME application page answers the funding question with "No. Funding is only available for on-campus students."
  • Kennesaw State says "a limited number of graduate assistantships are available for students enrolled in on-campus classes" in its civil engineering MS.
  • The University of Colorado Boulder says professional master's students in aerospace engineering "are not eligible for teaching or research assistantships."
  • The University of Washington says its aeronautics department "is unable to offer financial assistance (assistantships or fellowships)" to students in its online Master of Aerospace Engineering.

Doctoral policies can differ from master's policies, so treat these as a reason to ask, not as an answer. If a faculty member is interested in your research, ask whether a research assistantship can be held remotely, whether it covers tuition and whether it requires a set number of hours or a campus address.

Your employer is often the main funder

Many distance PhD students are working engineers, and programs build that into their rules. Texas A&M's online electrical engineering PhD asks students for a signed document showing that their employer is aware of the PhD study and allows the dissertation results to be published. The University of North Dakota says online electrical engineering PhD students can meet residency through a research environment provided by their place of employment, a national lab or another research facility. South Carolina says its successful distance doctoral students generally have research resources at their workplace or a nearby laboratory.

Employer support can take several forms: tuition assistance, paid time for research, or access to equipment and data. On the tax side, the IRS says that under a section 127 educational assistance program you may exclude up to $5,250 per calendar year in benefits, that the payments may be for graduate-level courses, and that they do not have to be for work-related courses. Benefits above that may still be excludable under other rules, such as the working condition fringe benefit. Ask your HR or tax adviser how your employer's plan works, and get in writing any repayment obligation if you leave.

Before you sign, settle who owns the research results and whether the employer can review publications. Programs like Texas A&M's make publication a condition.

Outside fellowships

National fellowships are open to some distance students, but read the eligibility rules closely. The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program supports students in NSF-supported STEM fields "pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees." Each fellowship provides three years of support over a five-year period, with a $37,000 stipend and a $16,000 cost-of-education allowance to the institution for each year of support, and NSF notes new fellowships are subject to the availability of funds. A part-time online student would not meet the full-time condition as written. Check the current solicitation for year-of-study limits and other rules.

For other awards, see our scholarships page, and check each award's enrollment, citizenship and field rules before you apply.

Federal loans: available, but limits have changed

Federal loans can fill gaps, but they must be repaid, so they are not funding in the sense of a scholarship or stipend. According to Federal Student Aid:

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to graduate students without a need test. You must be enrolled at least half-time at a school in the Direct Loan program, in a program leading to a degree or certificate, and award amounts are reduced for less than full-time enrollment. Interest accrues during all periods.
  • The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, set new loan limits.
  • Grad PLUS loans are being phased out. Starting July 1, 2026, graduate students can borrow them only under a limited exception for students already enrolled and borrowing in the same program before that date. For PLUS loans first disbursed from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, the fixed interest rate is 9.07%, with a 4.228% loan fee.

Ask the school's financial aid office what half-time means for its doctoral students, especially once you are in dissertation credits.

Questions to ask the department

  • Has any distance PhD student in this program held an assistantship or fellowship? On what terms?
  • Can a research assistantship be held remotely, and does it include a tuition waiver?
  • Are there tuition discounts for employees of partner companies, military members or educators?
  • Will the department sign employer tuition-assistance forms, and on what schedule?
  • Does dissertation-stage enrollment count as half-time for federal loans?
  • Which costs apply beyond tuition: travel for required exams or visits, proctoring and technology fees?

Travel can be a real cost if milestones are held on campus; our guide to PhD attendance requirements shows which programs require it. Browse online engineering PhD programs and compare published tuition on our affordable online engineering degrees page.
