Online Engineering Tuition and Scholarships: What You Will Actually Pay
How to read online engineering tuition (per credit vs. total, resident vs. online rates, extra fees) and how federal aid, scholarships and employer assistance fit in.
Updated October 12, 2026 · OnlineEngineeringSchools.net editorial team
The advertised price of an online engineering degree is rarely the number you end up paying. Schools publish tuition per credit, per course, per semester or for the whole program; some charge everyone the same online rate while others keep resident and nonresident prices; and engineering or distance fees often sit on a separate page. This guide shows how to turn a published rate into a realistic total, using real examples from schools' own pages, and how federal aid, scholarships and employer assistance fit around it.
Per-credit rate vs. total tuition
A per-credit rate is only half the calculation. Multiply it by the credits the degree requires, then add fees. Most online engineering master's programs are 30 credits: in our directory (October 2026), 203 of 260 master's programs list 30 credits (how we count). Some require more, and bachelor's degrees are far longer: Alabama's primarily online BSME, for example, requires 130 credit hours.
Published prices come in several shapes:
- Per credit. The University of Alabama lists its online MS in Mechanical Engineering at 30 credit hours and $480 tuition per hour, or $14,400 in tuition before fees.
- Per semester by load. Georgia Tech's online MS in Mechanical Engineering lists $3,415 tuition plus $107 in mandatory fees for a 3-credit semester, and $6,632 plus $440 for 6 credits.
- Per credit plus per-course fees, with a program estimate. Columbia Video Network lists credit tuition of $2,822 per credit, a non-refundable $395 CVN fee per course, and an estimated total cost of $88,715 for a ten-course MS such as the online MS in Mechanical Engineering.
Those last two examples are the most useful kind: a page that states fees alongside tuition. In our directory, 218 programs publish enough to estimate a comparable tuition total; the affordable master's listing shows those estimates and the basis for each.
Resident, nonresident and flat online rates
Do not assume an online program charges in-state and out-of-state students the same price. Schools handle it differently:
- Separate rates. UCF Online lists its online MSME at $327.32 per credit hour in state and $1,234.15 out of state. Virginia Tech's 2026–2027 graduate extended or virtual campus tuition is $1,027 per credit for Virginia residents and $1,996.75 for nonresidents.
- One flat rate. Purdue's online MSME charges $950 per credit hour for Indiana residents and out-of-state students alike.
- Same as campus. Stevens says there is no difference between online and on-campus tuition.
- Resident discounts and regional exchanges. UW–Madison's civil and environmental engineering MEng lists $1,100 per credit with an automatic $100 per-credit Wisconsin Resident Scholarship. The University of Idaho says qualifying applicants to its online civil MEngr are eligible for an out-of-state tuition waiver through the Western Regional Graduate Program.
Rates also change every year, so note the academic year printed beside any price you compare.
Fees that do not appear in the per-credit rate
Engineering and distance-education fees are the most common surprise. Examples from official pages:
| School | Fee | Amount as published |
|---|---|---|
| Virginia Tech | Engineering Supplemental Fee, graduate part-time (1–6 credits) | $500 per semester (2026–2027) |
| Virginia Tech | Engineering Supplemental Fee, graduate full-time (7+ credits) | $1,000 per semester (2026–2027) |
| Florida Atlantic University | Distance Learning fee on online course sections | $30 per credit |
| Columbia (CVN) | CVN fee | $395 per course |
Texas A&M tells online ocean engineering students that their total includes tuition and required fees plus a Graduate Engineering Program Fee (Remote), calculated with the university's tuition calculator. Missouri S&T reminds distance students of a Miner Book Bundle fee charged in addition to tuition. If a program page lists only tuition, look for the bursar's or controller's fee table before you compare. Virginia Tech's online MS in Ocean Engineering is a good case: the program page notes an Engineering Fee per semester and points to the bursar's rates.
Federal student aid: grants vs. loans
The U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid office (in an October 2025 publication compiled in summer 2025) describes three kinds of federal aid: grants, which generally do not have to be repaid; work-study; and loans, which must be repaid with interest. A few points matter for online engineering students:
- Pell Grants are for undergraduates with financial need who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. A Pell Grant will not help pay for a master's degree.
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students without a financial-need test, up to $20,500 a year for graduate or professional students, but the student must be enrolled at least half time. Part-time online students taking one course a term should ask the school what counts as half time.
- Grad PLUS is closing to new borrowers. Starting July 1, 2026, PLUS borrowing for graduate students is limited to specific students who meet previous borrowing and enrollment requirements, and no new graduate or professional students are eligible.
You apply through the FAFSA, and the program must be an eligible degree or certificate program. Loans are not scholarships. FSA's own wording is blunt: loans cannot be canceled because you did not like the education or did not get a job in your field, so borrow only what you need.
Scholarships and institutional aid for online students
Campus funding often does not follow students online. Several schools say so directly:
- Purdue Mechanical Engineering: funding "is only available for on-campus students."
- University of Florida ECE: College of Engineering Achievement Awards may not be applied to tuition and fees for online courses.
- University of Washington construction engineering: fee-based students are not eligible for tuition exemptions or university grants.
Some aid is aimed at online students, though. Stevens offers applicants to fully online graduate degree or certificate programs the chance to be awarded a StevensOnline Scholarship, and Missouri S&T lists a U.S. military rate of $795 per credit hour for 2026–2027. Ask each school which awards apply to distance students in writing, and browse our scholarships page for other options.
Employer tuition assistance
If your employer pays for your degree, the tax treatment matters. IRS Publication 970 says that under a qualified educational assistance program you can exclude up to $5,250 of employer-provided educational assistance from income each year; the plan must be written and meet other requirements, and amounts above $5,250 are generally taxable unless they qualify as a working condition fringe benefit. Ask your HR office whether a qualified plan exists, what it covers (tuition only, or fees and books too), and whether you must repay it if you leave.
A quick cost checklist
- Confirm the total credits, then multiply by the per-credit rate for your residency and the current academic year.
- Add every fee: engineering, distance, technology, per-course and graduation fees.
- Check whether federal loans require a minimum enrollment you will actually meet.
- Ask which scholarships and waivers apply to online students specifically.
- Subtract employer assistance only after you know its limits and repayment rules.
When you have totals for two or three programs, line them up side by side with our comparison tool.
